The role of the church in the development of Botswana through education and health and bringing people to God has been praised.
Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of the Molepolole Congregational Church (UCCSA) screen wall project estimated to cost more than P670 000, the Minister for State President, Mr Kabo Morwaeng, said the role played by the church remained paramount in building the nation.
He said as the church led many people to God, and contributed to peace as all evil was dealt with through the word of God.
Mr Morwaeng, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Molepolole South, said what the UCCSA was doing in Molepolole is to take ownership of the church and bring development to the community.
He said many churches, especially the main line churches, were built by the missionaries, and after they left, Batswana took over. He said there was more work needed to be done to make sure monumental buildings were taken care of.
He added that by building the screen wall around the church, the church premises would be safe and secure.
Mr Morwaeng said government took the role played by the church seriously as the government cannot function without the church. He said Botswana was known as a God-fearing nation and the church had laid down the foundation of faith.
He applauded the church for taking a positive step in building a wall around the church.
Mr Morwaeng reminded the church to pray for peace in Botswana, as the nation prepared for the general elections.
He asked different companies to come on board and help the church complete the project . He also encouraged other churches to take leave from Molepolole UCCSA and build their own premises of worship.
Mr Morwaeng further said his Molepolole South parliamentary office continued to support churches in any way possible for them to develop their plots.
When giving the project overview, the steering committee chairperson, Mr Boikanyo Rakgailwane, said the idea for the project began in July 2022 through the leadership of Reverend William Sejakgomo.
Mr Rakgailwane said it had not been an easy journey, but he was happy that at last the construction of the wall is commencing.
He said the construction has been divided into four phases, with the first phase envisaged to cost about P195 860.00.
In his closing remarks, Mr Gaopotlake Mokgadi said the project needed teamwork for it to come to fruition. He encouraged the congregants to contribute towards the construction of the wall.
Mr Morwaeng donated P5 000 to the church towards the project. Ends
