Charitable foundations play a crucial role in shaping the fabric of our society, says First Lady Neo Masisi.
She said this during the launch of the Albert Milton Foundation in Gaborone on Friday, which also honoured the late Albert Milton, who was Debswana’s managing director at the time of his death in 2019.
Ms Masisi said charitable foundations were the beacon of hope and progress, illuminating the path for those in need and providing the resources necessary for sustainable development.
“Through their unwavering commitment to service, such foundations foster a sense of unity and purpose, enabling communities to thrive and individuals to reach their fullest potential,” she said.
Therefore, she said the establishment of the Albert Milton Foundation marked a significant milestone in a journey toward nation building and community development.
“The Milton family has always believed in the power of giving back and over the years they supported communities in various ways. Since Mr Milton’s passing, his family has since carried on with the vision and preserved his legacy,” she said.
“It is through their efforts that we see the true spirit of Botho, the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity.
Their enduring commitment to philanthropy has left an indelible mark on countless lives, and their dedication to giving back has not gone unnoticed,” she added.
Ms Masisi described Mr Milton as a sterling nation builder and a true philanthropist whose commitment to community upliftment and development was evident in everything he did.
He was also described as a true leader who led with integrity and a heart full of compassion.
His love and passion for cycling saw him establishing Morupule Cycling club as well as Jwaneng Cycling club; not only for the well-being of the employees but to raise funds for charity as well.
He also took on cycling challenges, which raised funds for those in need.
In 2020, the foundation raised P2.4m for charity through the Albert Milton (AM) cycling challenge, followed by another successful P1.8m raised in 2022.
In both events, Ms Masisi participated as a guest cyclist.
Ms Masisi said the cycling challenges not only raised substantial funds for worthy causes but also highlighted the importance of involving young people in sports, emphasising that encouraging young people to participate, a culture of health, discipline, and community spirit was fostered.
“This foundation is not a family venture; it is a community endeavor. It is through your support and collaboration that we will create lasting change. Together, we can continue Albert’s legacy, encouraging a spirit of generosity and community service,” said Mr Milton’s widow, Ms Albertinah Milton.
She said the foundation spoke to her late husband’s values and their shared dream of structured, impactful giving.
“While cycling has been our primary focus, helping our youth stay active and engaged, we envision expanding our efforts to address a broader spectrum of community needs,” she said.
Meanwhile, the foundation was launched in style, with attendees clad in white sneakers, to remember Mr Milton’s love for sneakers who would wear them on Fridays throughout the weekend.
The date of the launch also marked his birthday.ENDS
