Police have cleared a hazardous scene at Lechana, 15km from Palapye following a fuel tanker and horse and trailer truck head on collision that led to fuel spill on Friday and resulted in closure of the affected spot along the A1 Road.
Inspector Christopher Mpofu of Palapye Police Station informed BOPA that they have managed to remove the fuel tanker from the road on Sunday between 3pm and 4pm.
He said the Department of Environmental Affairs, Crossroads Agile Minds Flexible Solutions and Vivo Energy Botswana experts were working in unison to clear the fuel on the 110 metres spot or accident scene.
Crossroads Agile Minds Flexible Solutions is a company that specialises in the transportation of fuel and bulk liquids while Vivo Energy Botswana sources, distributes and supplies Shell branded fuels and lubricants locally.
Inspector Mpofu said so far, the Department of Environmental Affairs experts have inspected the area, and were working on restoring the soil to minimise the risks. He said the affected soil had been removed from the ground to explore the possibility of refilling with fresh soil.
He further noted that the owner of the fuel tanker was working on the modalities of transporting the truck back to its base in Gaborone.
He advised motorists to drive with caution when approaching the area. Ends
