All roads lead to Selebi Phikwe this long weekend for softball enthusiasts to quench their thirst at the annual Softball Extravaganza tournament to be held at Mowana Ball Park.

The three-day tournament, hosted by Selebi Phikwe-based Comets, will see both men and ladies teams from north and south zones competing for a whooping P25 000 first prize. 

The runners-up will walk away with P20 000 and P18 000 for third placed teams from both categories.

Comets, Scramblers, Rail Giants, Rebels, Carats and Ghetto Yankees will lock horns with the southern based BDF IX, Police IX, Gata, Wells, Vikings and Titans.

Local Organising Committee chairperson, Oeme Morupisi urged all sport lovers to visit the copper-nickel town and enjoy the tournament during a press briefing on Tuesday at Cresta Bosele.

The opening game will be Scramblers and Police IX men on Saturday.

Morupisi explained that the committee also managed to raise over P600 000 for the competition.

Morupisi also explained that players would win individual awards for being the best slugger, best pitcher and best catcher, adding that teams which did not do well would not go home empty handed.

He said the tournament was not only expected to bring excitement to softball fans, but also to breathe some life into the economy of Selebi Phikwe.

SPEDU CEO, Lesedi Kgotlele said the extravaganza was one activity that could help revitalise the economy of the town, noting that a lot of people would visit Selebi Phikwe to enjoy the sport.

“We expect our hospitality sector, transport sector, businesses and the informal sector to benefit from the activity during the long weekend,” she said. 

The town mayor, Lucas Modimana said they were ready to welcome visitors and that it was well illuminated.

The patron of the softball extravaganza and Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry, Beauty Manake is expected to grace the tournament. Ends
