Young Loapi shines at Paratus Bike Shredders challenge

The Paratus Bike Shredders challenge has become the highlight of the country’s cycling events, as it has proved to be a platform that nurtures the next generation of cyclists.

Organised by Lifecycle Bicycle Coaching and Tuition alongside Paratus Botswana, the shredders challenge attracted more children especially girls during its stage two of the four part series held at Melo Park in Mokatse on July 6.

Young shredder Loapi Magashula, who completed her 5km distance in 1:12:28 was among those who participated in the event. Loapi is not new to the Paratus challenge. Just at the start of her cycling journey, she successfully completed her first stage, though she used a balanced bike. However, the stage two event over the weekend, saw her transition to a pedal bike, where she seamlessly cycled the Ruretse outskirts without stabilisers, focused and enjoying the race.

“It was a fun race, I loved it and today I did not get support,” said the excited Loapi.

The race also had older shredders in junior category. Ryana Kenaope shared her experience saying the route was not much of a challenge except a few stretches around Ruretse where the road had patches and made it a little difficult for them to enjoy the cycle challenge. Kenaope won the 20km high school section clocking 1:09:21.She appreciated that kids, especially girls were recognised in the cycle races.

“When I started cycling there were no kids categories, but lately there has been a significant improvement,” Kenaope said adding that there were no options for kids when she started and she had to compete in adult categories.

The organiser of the race, Gobona Mantle said she was impressed that more girls were showing interest. “We are seeing more girls joining the sport, and it is a great thing especially that we grew up believing that cycling is a boy sport,” she said.

The race was supported by Grip Runner, Pura Soda, and Noble Supplies Furniture Manufactures. Ends
