Students from various SADC countries have been encouraged to revive the spirit of debate, which could help Africa realise its full potential.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Southern African Universities Debate Championship (SAUDC) yesterday at the University of Botswana (UB), Chancellor Ms Tebelelo Seretse emphasised the importance of respectful and tolerant debate tournament, citing the legacies of Sir Seretse Khama, Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Nelson Mandela as exemplary embodiment of such values.
She welcomed students from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and other nations, expressing delight at engaging with great minds whose debating skills could foster a culture of intellectual exchange. Ms Seretse highlighted Botswana's Kgotla system as a model for inclusive and participatory governance, which has been adopted beyond Africa.
She advised students to prepare for an Africa admired by other continents.
She said debates could help address corruption through topics discussed during the competition.
“Through your brilliant minds show the world that civilization was born and bred in Africa," she said.
She also said Africa was fortunate to have youthful, intelligent individuals and urged them to believe in their opinions, regardless of opposition, and to avoid drugs and alcohol.
SAUDC Convenor Mr Tshiamo Badubi expressed excitement about the tournament, themed "Ko marakanelong," loosely translated to mean "where great minds meet."
He highlighted the benefits of debate, including public speaking, regional cooperation, friendship, and networking.
Mr Badubi noted that the week-long tournament would help cultivate a strong debate culture within the SADC region.
Twenty three universities are participating in the championship. Ends
