 Four women football teams will battle it out in the DTCB Championship at Lekedi Football Centre starting today. 

A draw conducted on Wednesday pitted Makgabz City from Tsabong against Gaborone United, while Tawana Top Girls will face Granada Fc from Selebi Phikwe.

The winners will face each other at the National Stadium on Saturday to determine the 2024 DTC Botswana Women football champion, while losers will fight for third and fourth positions. 

Diamond Trading Company Botswana corporate affairs manager, MacDonald Motsele said said his desire was to see those who would be playing at the tournament making it to the international stage.

Motsele said he was aware that as the final games approached, football lovers bet on different teams they favoured to win the tournament. 

“I take a view that we are all betting on the girl child, women football is the winner today and we have witnessed it grow through this partnership over three years,” he said.

When the championship started, Motsele said less than 30 teams were involved but the number now exceeded 100. 

As the sponsors, he said they had witnessed the championship’s success and now was the time to go back to the drawing board and evaluate if they had attained the intended objective they wanted.

He said they had entered into a three-year partnership with the Botswana Football Association to sponsor the women football championship and 2024 was the final year of their agreement.

“Sponsorship was P1.5 million each year and was not only focused on the championship but incorporated grassroots festivals across the country, Motsele said, adding that the festivals were used to enhance football skills of the girl child at primary school level. 

He said it was also through such festivals that they taught young girls survival skills, an ingredient of the partnership.

The champion will win P250 000, second position winner will get P150 000 while three and four winners will get P100 000 and P50 000 respectively. Ends
