The winter camp inter gala between BDF Dolphins and Gaborone Aquatic Club will be held at the Gaborone Aquatic Club on Saturday.
Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Chedza Makabi of the Dolphins Winter Camp Parents Committee said the teams were ready to compete.
She noted that those who would be competing were aged between 8 and 17.
When providing some insights into the event, she said it was meant to help grow the swimming culture in Botswana and also to produce swimmers who could compete in world-class aquatics competitions.
Also, she said the initiative allowed swimmers to train year-round, even during the winter season, ensuring that they remained in peak physical condition without seasonal breaks.
“The main aim of this idea is to keep our swimmers in shape throughout the year, maintaining their competitiveness,” she explained.
She further said such tournaments helped maintain physical strength and momentum.
“Swimming helps one to always keep fit and do their best. The routine of this club’s training aids swimmers in staying on track with their swimming schedule,” Makabi said.
Regarding the inclusion of Botswana children in leisure activities, Makabi referenced various policy documents and legal instruments that emphasised holistic child development and the fundamental rights of children to play and engage in leisure activities.
She cited the National Children’s Act of 2009, Article 19, which states that ‘every child has a right to leisure, play, and recreation appropriate to their age, maturity and level of development’.
She stressed the importance of these initiatives in fostering the overall development and well being of children. Ends
