Lefatshe Seleka has secured a coveted spot in the 2024 athletics Under 20 championships to be held in Lima, Peru in August.
The 400m-athlete qualified for the championships during the Botswna Athletics Association (BAA) track and field event held in Francistown on June 30.
Racing neck-and-neck with Keorapetse Oreokame, who had already qualified for the championships, Seleka came in close second with a remarkable time of 47:29 seconds and snatched the second qualifying spot.
His talent and relentless determination, propelled him to the international arena, securing space among the world's most promising young athletes.
With his eyes now set on Lima games, Seleka’s star is poised to shine even brighter.
Still in the same category, Kabelo Shabane' s Olympic dreams were shattered as he missed the 45:00 mark by a mere 0:75 seconds, clocking in at 45:75.
Despite the setback, Shabane displayed determination and grit on the track, which earned him a third place in the race.
Meanwhile, BAA northern region chairperson, Issac Mbise, has called for the establishment of a sporting academy in Botswana.
Speaking on the sidelines of the games, Mbise voiced his long term belief that Botswana’s time for a sporting academy has come.
Mbise said Botswana athletes were brimming with potential, but they needed a dedicated training ground to hone their skills to reach their fullest potential.
He said a sporting academy would provide the ideal platform for young athletes to flourish and strengthen the country’s position as a leading contender in the world of athletics.
He said sport academy would provide an elite training ground for young athletes, equipping them with skills, knowledge, and experience needed to excel at national and international levels.
