Kanye water woes to be resolved soon

The Member of Parliament for Kanye North, Mr Thapelo Letsholo has assured residents of Kanye North that acute water shortage would soon  be addressed.

Addresing consultative constituency meeting in Kanye recently, Mr Letsholo said the  completion of Phase 1 project of water reticulation network maintenance of portable water,  would alleviate residents  from insufficient water supply.

Mr Letsholo said some areas had started experiencing improved water supply.

Therefore, he said he was optimistic that Phase 2 would ultimately resolve water woes  in Kanye.

Concerning the construction of new Kanye Hospital, Mr Letsholo said funds for the project had been released saying the company  engaged had already visted the site earmarked for the new hospital.

Additionally, Mr Letsholo stated that the first stage of the construction of Kanye Stadium was complete, which included construction of the pitch and the boundary wall. The next stage, he said would be  construction of the ablution blocks.

He apprised the residents that, due to the extreme drought year, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has declared 2023/24 a drought season.

He said, the drought relief mitigation measures had been extended to July 1-31  2024, and shall include payment of 85 per cent  for seasonal loans to farmers who got loans from Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA).

Mr Letsholo shared that the relief shall also provide a 30 per cent feed subsidy for roughage concentrates and supplements and 50 per cent subsidy for acaricides and antibiotics, amongst others.

He therefore encouraged the residents to ensure that they take advantage and benefit from the initiative.

The Kanye North legislator also briefed residents about the  increased  Ipelegeng programme quota to 30 000 to cater for the high number of beneficiaries on the waiting list as a result of limited seasonal jobs in the agricultural sector.

He noted that the increase shall also include the budget and running costs to cater for the additional projects resulting from the increased Ipelegeng quota.

This, he said showed  government  commitment to addressing challenges affecting its people.

The MP also  updated residents about issues discussed in  the last Parliament sitting.

He said the  Constitution Amendment Bill of 2024 was set to be moved to the third reading, a process which would  not be in less than three months, where it would require two thirds of the majority votes MPs to decide whether it should be law or not..

He noted that the contents of the amendments included amongst others some clauses that called for the rights to health, education and work to be enshrined in the Constitution.

Mr Letsholo noted that other proposed amendments, which shall call for a referendum to be made include the death penalty, prostitution, inter-sex marriages and abortion.

While responding to questions, Mr Letsholo thanked Kanye Minister’s Fraternal for setting up a plaque on the side of the road, in the A2 road, Kanye-Ranaka junction where the accident occurred, in remembrance of the seven South African church members who lost their lives in the tragic accident on  April 28 this year.

He said consultation would further be made with the Land Board and Roads Department to legalise and ensure the plaque was official  and in accordance with the requirements of the law. Earlier on, in her remarks, the Umbrella Village Development Committee representative, Ms Gloria Keagile, decried shortage of water in the village.

She requested an update to be made on the progress in the water reticulation network maintenance of portable water, adding that as a mitigating factor, the VDC was considering increasing the water tanks to facilitate for more water bowsing.

Ms Keagile also requested for an update on the much-anticipated construction of the Kanye hospital. ENDS
