Company equips learners with essential skills

In its efforts to foster creativity, innovation and problem-solving skills, Destination Imagination Botswana (DI) organised a one-day bootcamp for Regent Hill Primary School learners to equip them with essential skills and mindset change to become creative and innovative thinkers.

Speaking in an interview Saturday, after the boot camp held in Gaborone, Destination Imagination Botswana programmes facilitator and digital creator, Ms Sophia Diboko said the bootcamp’s activities were meant to introduce students to exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education.

She said students were taught coding, robotics skills and Artificial Intelligence, adding that the sessions were designed to aid students improve on their soft skills.

The soft skills, she said included; communication, critical thinking, team work and problem-solving.

Destination Imagination Botswana’s main goal, she said was to encourage students to fully embrace the soft skills they were good at, as an individual or as a collective, as well as those they believed they were not good at.

“Our bootcamp fosters creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving, through STEAM activities. By teaching children to believe in themselves and the skills they possess, we want to boost their confidence, creativity and innovation,” she explained.

Ms Diboko also said the company’s programmes and activities were designed to empower primary, secondary, tertiary learners, as well as educators to prepare them to tackle future challenges, through both problem-solving and critical thinking techniques.

By imparting such knowledge and skills in the students, she said this would help them become innovative and sustainable leaders in their communities, as well as in their professional pursuit.

Destination Imagination Botswana is an affiliate of DI Africa, a global educational non-profit making organisation, aimed at inspiring and equipping Africa’s next generation with new realities of the digital world.

Through hands on STEAM education, Destination Imagination Botswana empowers young minds with critical thinking, creativity and collaboration as well as problem-solving skills so that in future they help them transform their communities and contribute positively to the global society. ENDS
