Botswana Tertiary Student Sports Association (BOTESSA) will send four chess players to the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Mind Games in Entebbe, Uganda scheduled from June 25 to 30.
The four are captain Thandie Bonno from Botswana International University of Science and Technology, Larona Otimilwe of Gaborone University of College of Law and Professional Studies, Osego Smith of Boitekanelo College and Gorata Mmete of University of Botswana.
Speaking at the sendoff ceremony held on Thursday, Women and Sport Botswana (WASBO) vice chairperson, Nozie Malunga-Payet said representing Botswana at the chess championships in Uganda was not just a testament to their individual talent but was a reflection of the nation’s commitment to empowering women through sport and intellectual endeavours.
“Your journey to Uganda is a beacon of what can be achieved when talent meets opportunity and it underscores the importance of our collective efforts,” she said.
Chess, she said, was more than a game as it was a battlefield of the mind, where strategy, foresight, and resilience were the weapons of choice.
“In this arena, every move counts, every decision matters, and every player must constantly adapt and overcome.
As you prepare to compete on the international stage, remember that you carry with you not just your personal aspirations, but the hopes and dreams of many young women looking up to you In Botswana,” she said.
She also encouraged the players that as they competed, they should channel the spirit of unity, resilience and excellence that defined the nation.
“Remember that each game, each move, and each challenge you face is an opportunity to showcase your strength and intellect.
Play not just to win, but to inspire others to pursue their passions with the same vigour and determination that has brought you this far,” she said.
Malunga-Payet also said although there was still much work to be done, they had made significant strides in promoting women’s participation across various sports.
She said WASBO was committed to creating opportunities, breaking barriers and ensuring that women in sports were given the recognition and support they deserved.
Captain Bonno said although their opponents were a closed book to them, they had prepared very well to face them.
“The four of us played together for a very long time, so there is a chemistry, and I am confident that we will bring positive results,” she said. ENDS
