Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) Interclub boxing tournament held in Gaborone on Saturday was interesting because of the number of young and upcoming boxers unveiled.

The tournament had 32 bouts and the first four featured new boxers which showed efforts made by different clubs to groom new talent in the sport.

BoBA secretary general, Taolo Tlouetsile said the new boxers could be attributed to their recent programme of training coaches for development.

In the 48kg category, new comers Khumo Pontsho of SSKB and Mogolodi Samuel of Prisons Boxing Club went toe-to-toe and Pontsho emerged victorious in a unanimous decision.

The 60kg category also saw new comer, Liam Aflman of DTCB defeating another novice in James Gaolatlhe of Prisons in a unanimous decision.

In a contest that was stopped by the referee, Arnold Moloi of Prisons defeated Brian Van Wyk of DTCB in the 71kg category.

Tlouetsile revealed that women boxers also participated in the tournament and that they had three bouts where they were featured.

He said it was important to develop more women boxers, adding that the few in the game have been impressive.

In the women’s 51kg bout, which was stopped by the referee, Rodah Monna of Francistown Boxing Club defeated Jennifer Sechi of PBC.

In a closely contested bout in the 60kg category, Osadi Motang of GVBC narrowly defeated Keatlaretse Modise of Francistown 3-2.

Overall eight bouts were stopped by the referee, five were walkovers as opponents did not show up and two boxers were disqualified. Ends
