All set for African championship

The Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) has selected a formidable team that will represent the country at the 23rd CAA African Senior Athletics Championships, which will be held in Douala, Cameroon from Friday.

The team is made up of 32 athletes; 12 females, 20 males and nine officials. During the last edition held in Saint Pierre, Mauritius, Botswana won seven medals.

Four were gold medals won by Letsile Tebogo in the 200 metres, long jumper Tlhalosang Tshireletso, and 4x400m mixed and 4x400m men’s relay.

The two silver medals were won by Bayapo Ndori in the 400m, while Tshireletso won yet another medal in the triple jump.

Tshepiso Masalela won a bronze medal in the 800m race, and Botswana was ranked in position six out of 23 nations.

BAA vice president, Oaboana Theetso, said in an interview that this time they have sent a large team, adding that they were confident to surpass their last performance.

He said most of the athletes who would be competing were not new to the competition more so that some of them were defending champions.

“Letsile is the defending champion in the 200m, our men’s 4x400m relay and mixed, generally we expect a good performance from our team,” he said.

Theetso said most of the athletes have been doing well this season and the expectation was that those who were yet to hit the Olympics qualifying mark would use the competition to qualify.

“Our intention as the BAA is to increase the number of athletes who will compete at the Olympics.

We are of the view that the Africa Senior Championship is the right platform for us,” he said.
