Consultations on the relocation of Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) houses in Samaphaleche, Jwaneng are ongoing. 

Jwaneng Town Council mayor, Ms Olga Ditsie said when opening a full council session recently that in their last meeting BHC presented partnership options to the council, adding that they were consulting Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development on the proposed agreements.

She assured councillors that they would be updated once the process was completed.

With regard to the second Transitional National Development Plan (TNDP) which comes to an end at the end of the 2024/25 financial year, she said it paved the way for National Development Plan 12/Urban Development Plan 5 (UDP5) to be implemented from financial year 2025/2026 to 2029/2030.

She said the drafting of Jwaneng UDP had started with community consultations before proceeding to chapter writing. 

The mayor said project proposals had been completed and would be presented for adoption.

Ms Ditsie further noted that the local economic development strategy, which was launched in October 2022, was being implemented. She said there were eight projects from four key themes aligned to Vision 2036.

The mayor said the most important objectives were job creation, sustainable urban and rural development and pro-poor approaches within a holistic strategy, adding that the needs of the poor, women, children and people living with disabilities were prioritised.

She urged private sector companies to collaborate with them and ensure they benefited the community. 

She said from the eight projects they had only managed to fund two and that construction would start this month.

She noted that Debswana funded the arts and crafts project while the market centre was partly funded through Constituency Community Funds. 

“We implore other companies to come on board as we still have other interesting projects that require funding,” she said. Ends
