Remembering ThatoTT Modiakgotla

In the wake of a colleague’s passing, the staff at Department of Information Services (DIS) is grappling with the loss of Mr Thato Modiakgotla, known fondly as ‘TT’.
His sudden departure on Sunday has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him, as they reflect on the memories shared with the departed.
I vividly recall my first encounter with Mr Modiakgotla during our time at Monash University in Johannesburg, South Africa. A standout figure among us, TT was known for owning a vehicle—an uncommon luxury for foreign students like us, who were government-sponsored and faced hurdles in acquiring personal transportation due to paperwork and safety concerns.
While most of us relied on shuttle buses for commuting, Mr Modiakgotla stood out for his maturity and financial acumen.
Despite the modest monthly stipend of R3 000, he demonstrated exceptional saving habits that set him apart from his peers. Colleagues describe him as stern yet humble, a no-nonsense individual with a strong sense of integrity.
Our paths frequently crossed during our time at Monash, as we shared classes and endured exam marathons together at the media center. TT’s presence commanded respect; his determined nature meant that if he needed a computer, a space would be made available for him.
Following his graduation, Mr Modiakgotla ventured into entrepreneurship before joining Mmegi Newspaper as a public relations and marketing officer. In April 2020, he transitioned to DIS alongside his colleagues Ms Chendzimu Manyepedza, Mr Tebogo Lephogole, and Ms Tidimalo Mosarwa.
Together, we navigated the complexities of Human Resources processes, leaning on each other for support during workdays that often spilled into lunchtime conversations. The presence of fellow Monash Alumni within the department, including Ms Mmoniemang Motsamai, Mr Botho Maribeng, and Ms Naomi Leepile, fostered a sense of community and belonging.
TT’s deep passion for farming shone through in his detailed coverage of Ministry of Agriculture programmes, despite his reserved nature. While he was often quiet and reserved, Mr Modiakgotla cherished meaningful connections once the initial barriers were broken.
As we mourn the loss of Mr Thato ‘TT’ Modiakgotla, we remember him not only for his professional dedication but for the warmth and wisdom he brought to our lives. May his soul rest in peace. Ends
