Cattle restocking underway in Ramokgwebana

11 Jun 2024

In a promising turn of events, 52-year-old Mr Jabulani Lekonga of Ramokgwebana has been presented with 11 heifers to replace the 12 animals he lost to Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) back in 2022.

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi made good on his promise to restock cattle for farmers in Zone 6b, a commitment that came to fruition during the cattle restocking exercise that kicked off on Monday.

Reflecting on the challenging times he faced due to the loss of his cattle, Mr Lekonga expressed gratitude for the opportunity the restocking initiative offered him.

“I had no cattle to sell, to buy school uniforms for my children, or to contribute during family events,” said Mr Lekonga, emphasising that this fresh start was well-prepared for.

Member of Parliament for Tati West, Mr Simon Moabi, commended the government for compensating farmers generously, enabling some to build homes while others ventured into small businesses.

Following the depopulation process where 10 219 cattle were culled, farmers received 70 per cent of the compensation in cash and the remaining 30 per cent in live animals.

With 551 cattle already secured out of the 7 181 needed for the ongoing restocking endeavor, 976 farmers across various locations are set to benefit.

Dr Thito Seomile, the District Veterinary Officer, highlighted that 111 farmers in Ramokgwebana alone would benefit from the initiative. Cattle from regions like Boteti, Tonota, and Tutume were sourced to meet the restocking requirements, with a call for more farmers to take part to ensure the success of the programme. Ends
