11 Jun 2024

Jwaneng B emerged victorious at the bowling tournament dubbed Orapa Major held in Orapa over the weekend.

Participating teams included 16 teams from Francistown Bowling, Gaborone Bowling, Selebi Phikwe Bowling, Orapa Bowling and Jwaneng Bowling Clubs.  Perceived by many as somehow a sport for the elites, bowling is now slowly gaining popularity among many Batswana, given participation and number of spectators at games.

Young people have also developed keen interest in the sport, as evidenced by players who participated in the Orapa Major where teams comprised both the youth and the elderly.

In a tough encounter, Jwaneng B, skipped or rather marshalled by Regent Reid accumulated 9 points and 34 shots, hence won the tournament. In second position was Selebi Phikwe C led by Khumo Kebalatetse with 9 points and 31 shots, a very slim margin between number one and number two. Jwaneng A, skipped by Charles Diteko accumulated 6 points and 17 shots and 1.5 shots in aggregate, thus obtaining third position.  The host, Orapa A, led by Kitso Robert got position four with 6 points and 17 shots and 1.36 shots in aggregate.

Teams however did not go home empty handed, position one went away with P4 000 whereas number two scooped P3 000 while position three was awarded P2 000 and number four was given P1 000.  Orapa Major tournament was sponsored by Earthridge Engineering Solutions, a 100 per cent citizen owned company operating within Orapa mine.

Botswana Bowling Association president, Kitso Robert said everything went well and the tournament was well organised.

He however appealed for more sponsors to come on board as lack of sponsorship was one of the major challenges faced by the association. ENDS
