Chobe Enclave landmark breath-taking attraction

06 Jun 2024

Just a few metres off Chobe National Park through the Ngoma gate by the iconic road loop descending into Muchenje stands a new 3.5 metre metal structure that welcomes visitors to the Chobe Enclave

The artistic landmark accentuates the area and captures the essence of Chobe as a tourist destination of choice.

The board succinctly speaks of the rich cultural heritage, flora and fauna of Chobe and the integral role of tourism in uniting communities and safeguarding natural resources.

The new artistic impression affirms the warmth and hospitality of the inhabitants. It also features an engraved tall tree, a symbol of the Chobe Enclave vast forest reserves, and relaxing under a tree shade is a water reedbuck, an endangered animal identified by the enclave residents for safeguarding.

Water lilies and reeds also clasp under the tree, signifying the food harvested in wetlands and an array of products collected from forests.

Behind the primary portrait stands dual metal boards etched with assorted designs that tell the story of the unique basket weaving skills of Chobe residents.

There is also a map of the Chobe Enclave villages, an abstract on their arts and culture cooperatives as well as their funders, JICA, and other supporters of the ecotourism project.

The landmark area is also a favourite spot for wild animals and visitors, so tourists have to be on the lookout while enjoying the thrill of serene sprawling forests and scenic views.

Those driving 4x4 vehicles can drive up the escarpment behind the landmark to get an impressive view of the Chobe River channel and Ngoma Border Post while enjoying magic sunsets. Chobe Enclave Community Trust (CECT) board deputy chairperson, Sefela Gasetingwe said the new landmark promoted tourism diversification in Chobe and that it gave tourists a glimpse of their culture.

She added that they hoped to entice tourists to stay longer in their area and to visit their arts and culture cooperatives as well as to experience their culture, history, practices, food, song and dance. ENDS
