Social clubs role in communities significant

05 Jun 2024

Social clubs play a major role in the development of the community.

Kweneng District Council chairperson, Mr Allen Jacob said thus during the handover ceremony of a two-roomed house and a toilet that Tlhatlaganyane Social Club donated to a needy person in Lentsweletau recently.

He said even though they were formed for the purposes of leisure among friends, the clubs had since turned around their purpose to lend a helping hand in the community.

Mr Jacob said what Tlhatlaganyane had done was a compassionate gesture that would go a long way in easing the life of the beneficiary and remain in the hearts of the community members.

“What you have done today will forever be engraved in the hearts of the community members and those you have assisted.”

The council chairperson thanked them for their compassion that influenced them to put a roof over a fellow citizen’s head.

He said even though the council was mandated to help those in need, sometimes financial constraints prevented them from helping many people at the same time.

Therefore, he said, public private partnerships remained pivotal to helping those in need.

Mr Jacob implored the social club to continue helping others in the community.

The chairperson acknowledged that social clubs were initially perceived as bad influences, but they had since changed to being an important development partner to the society.

He encouraged the beneficiary to take care of the house and ensure it maintained its original beauty.

When giving an overview of the project, the club chairperson, Mr Molelekwa Poitshego said the beneficiary was identified through a social media post where upon they acted swiftly to attend to the matter.

He said they convened a meeting after assessment and club members made contributions towards the construction of the house.

Mr Poitshego added that their initial intent was to build a toilet for the beneficiary, but the club later decided to add the two-roomed house, looking at the dire situation.

He said the journey, which started March, was not an easy one, but through the commitment of club members, who kept giving out of their own will, made the project possible.

He said some members contributed different materials for the construction of the house and toilet, while some builders offered free labour.

The beneficiary, Ms Mmabontle Sesupo was lost for words when she received the house.

She said she was happy that she had a roof over her head, thanks to Tlhatlaganyane Social Club's decision to reach out to her and her family.

When giving vote of thanks, Councillor Rogers Kgatitswe thanked the club, observing that the house donation was not their first, as they had previously made donations to several beneficiaries in the community.

Councillor Kgatitswe pointed out that even though the Sesupo family had received a house, they still had many other needs that were not met, hence called on other donors come forth and assist. ends
