The rapid economic transformation of the Republic of Korea within a short time inspires Botswana’s own pursuit of swiftly gravitating towards high income status, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has said.

Addressing the Korea-Africa Summit at the Korea International Exhibition Centre in Goyang June 4, President Masisi said the rapid evolution of Korea over the past few decades offered an inspirational model worth emulating.

“The Republic of Korea’s remarkable development serves as a source of great inspiration to Botswana. I am, therefore, delighted to be here in Seoul, representing the people of Botswana who are intentional about emulating your country’s development successes,” Dr Masisi said. He said what the host nation had attained offered lessons to African countries on what was possible if nations were focused on hard work, developing a skilled human resource, utilising technology and innovation and set their mindset towards rapid modernisation.

“Korea’s position today as one of the leading and most innovative nations in the world is a remarkable achievement, considering that just a few decades ago the Republic of Korea was an agrarian-based economy. Botswana looks forward to joining hands with the Korean people on her journey of economic growth and modernisation,” Dr Masisi stated.

He said Botswana and Africa sought to learn how to deploy technological solutions to advance socio-economic development agendas in order to make headway on agricultural productivity, management of natural resources, healthcare services, e-government and e-commerce among others.

“My government is committed to investing in science and technology, building a robust digital infrastructure and creating a supportive environment for small businesses and start-ups. To this end, we are equipping our youth with the necessary skills to become innovators and entrepreneurs of tomorrow as well as working towards ensuring that all citizens have access to the tools which are needed to participate in the global economy,” President Masisi remarked.

The inaugural Korea-Africa Summit has brought together delegations from 48 African countries, including 25 state leaders and is co-chaired by Korea President, Mr Yoon Suk Yeol and the Chairperson of the African Union, also Mauritania President Mohamed Ghazouani.

The summit will address global issues such as climate change, food security, supply chain stability as well as trade and investment opportunities. ends
