BCD strengthens partnership with donors

Debswana has announced its commitment to increasing the representation of people with disabilities within its workforce to 4.5 per cent by 2030. Currently, the company employs 132 individuals with various disabilities.

Speaking at the Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD) function aimed at engaging and appreciating donors, Ms Kefilwe Mokone, the Head of Cultural Transformation Diversity and Inclusion at Debswana, emphasised the importance of supporting individuals with disabilities.

She highlighted that providing opportunities for people with disabilities was a key focus area for Debswana, as part of their corporate vision.

Ms Mokone revealed that Debswana has implemented an entrepreneurial support programme specifically designed for businesses owned by individuals with disabilities.

This initiative, she said aimed to create business opportunities in collaboration with Debswana. Encouraging other companies and organizations to support BCD, Ms Mokone emphasised the capabilities and expertise that individuals with disabilities bring to the table. She called for collective efforts in promoting inclusivity and supporting the disabled community.

Commending the sponsors for their contribution to BCD's mission, Mr Kgosi Tlhowe, the Chairperson of BDC Board, acknowledged the vital role played by sponsors in enabling BCD to serve individuals with disabilities effectively.

Mr Tlhowe emphasised the organisation's dedication to delivering services tailored to the needs of the disabled community.

For her part, Ms Letlhogonolo Paulo, the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) Manager for Communications and Public Relations, said there was need for an education system that catered to the diverse needs of all learners, including those with special educational requirements.

Ms Paulo reiterated BQA's commitment to ensuring equitable access to education for all learners, irrespective of gender, disability, or any other circumstances. She emphasised the value of inclusive learning environments that support and empower every learners.

As the national education regulator, Ms Paulo emphasised the role of stakeholders in fostering inclusive education practices and promoting equal opportunities for all, including individuals with disabilities. Ends
