The newly established Maun Heroes Netball Club both women and men’s teams performed exceptionally well to reach the finals of the ongoing LUCARA Botswana Netball League which will be held in Orapa from May 31 to June 02.

Both teams were formed in March last year and affiliated to Botswana Netball Association in April 2023.

Marketing and public relations officer of Maun Heroes Netball Club, Mokeresete Mokeresete confirmed in an interview that the development was a great achievement given that the teams were the first from North West region to play in elite league.

He said at the end of the second round of the league, the women’s team scooped position two behind Tasc with 22 points after playing 14 games.

“On the other hand, the men’s team finished on position three with 10 points behind Tafic and Nico United” explained Mokeresete.

“By finishing within top four in the north zone at the end of the second round, both teams have now qualified for the league’s top eight which is the national finals of the league,” he added.

Mokeresete further noted that at the top eight, women’s team would lock horns with Police, Jwaneng and Nico United in the same pool while the men’s team would be in the same pool with Tafic, BDF Cats and Prisons respectively.

Although he acknowledged both Maun Heroes teams would be playing against experienced and formidable teams he assured supporters that they would build highly competitive teams in the next season considering the fact that they were using young players with an average age of 20 years.

Since they were new teams, he said there was no need to put themselves under pressure to win the league but if opportunity presented itself, the teams would rise to the challenge as this would also bring confidence to players as they build for the future.

However, Mokeresete appealed to the Ngamiland community to rally behind the teams. 

“We intend to set up structures around the region because we can see now that netball sport is heading in the right direction,” he added. ENDS
