The Maun-based Western Dynamite Women Football Club will represent Nhabe region at the northern play offs for the Diamond Training Company Botswana (DTCB) top qualifiers billed for Francistown June 1 -2.
Western Dynamite proved their mettle during the regional championship games for the women’s’ league held at Maun Sports Complex over the weekend where they were crowned the champions after humiliating The Lords Sporting Club of Shakawe 5-0.
Prior to that, the Maun side walloped Etsha Green Stars 23-0 of the Gumare stream to book a ticket to the final that was played on Sunday where they became victorious walking away with a trophy and gold medals.
The two-day tournament was organised by Nhabe Regional Football Association (NRFA) and attracted three teams from Gumare, Shakawe and Maun, which were all winners in their streams.
In an interview, NRFA vice chairman, Josphat Jackalas said the tournament was a success and thanked all the teams for giving supporters competitive games.
“We had a successful tournament in search of the 2023/24 regional championship and Western Dynamites proved that they are ready to compete and we believe it will represent us well at the northern play offs to be held in Francistown,” he added.
He said they were hopeful that Western Dynamites would book themselves as spot at the DTCP Top 4 tournament to be played in Gaborone.
The team is not new to the tournament as last year it finished third and Jackalas is optimistic that this time it would bring the P250 000 prize money home.
Jackalas also appreciated that women football was growing fast and that women teams were performing better than the male teams.
He appealed to potential sponsors to support women football to empower the next generation.
Most women clubs, he said, were playing with school-going children which compromised continuity as some well experienced players ended up pursuing their tertiary studies. He said if finances permitted
, the association could help in identifying and nurturing more talent. He said Ngamiland region is an area with a wealth of talent in sports and sponsoring women football clubs, could help to create opportunities for players and increase visibility for the sport. Western Dynamites head coach, Tizhani Kangangwani concurred that the team was ready to compete noting that the girls’ morale was high and they were promising to put the district on the map.
He called for support noting that the team was made of school-going children who could not afford to transport themselves for training.
Kangangwani said most of the time he used his resources to assist players to honour games and training sessions.
“We are ready for the competition and this time we are determined to fight and bring the trophy and the prize money home.
My players are well disciplined and responding well to instructions. We are aiming high,” he said. ENDS
