13 May 2024

Jwaneng Bowling Club’s Mpopi Pelemo and Modisaotsile Mphotho from Selebi Phikwe Bowling Club will represent Botswana at the World Singles Champion of Champions to be held in New Zealand next year.

The duo secured the spots subsequent to emerging champions in the Ladies and Men’s singles categories respectively during the 2024 National Bowling Tournament held in Jwaneng.

For the Ladies Singles, Boikhutso Mooketsi of Jwaneng emerged the runner up, followed by Tshenolo Moshokgo of Orapa, while Baven Balendra of Francistown and Kaizer Geche of Orapa obtained second and third positions respectively in the Men’s Singles category.

In an interview after the tournament on Saturday, Pelemo, who also obtained third position on Ladies Pairs alongside Pono Rakola, attributed her performance to the hard work and dedication she had prior to the tournament.

She said her previous experience on international competitions would contribute towards preparations for the upcoming challenge against the best bowlers in the world.

“This calls for more practice because I have had the opportunity to experience the competition at international level.

Last year I participated in the Fours and Triples at the World Championships in Australia and I have seen how they play,” she said.

For 29-year old Mphotho, winning the tournament and subsequently representing the country for the first time is a dream come true and a testament of his commitment to the sport.

He said even though he had previously won in other categories, the latest achievement was a highlight and motivated him to work harder.

“Today’s win means a lot because I have been trying for this position for years. Even though I have played for the national team before, I have always wanted to have an international experience and the opportunity has presented itself,” he said.

He said as a young person, he appreciated youth development programmes such as Re Ba Bona Ha, which developed talent and skills from a young age.

“I encourage fellow youth to start playing bowling because it is a good sport, they should focus on enjoying it and then gain experience as they go.

Embracing the sport will also increase competition hence growth for bowling.” ENDS
