Gaborone United on brink of championship win

05 May 2024

Gaborone United (GU) women’s team is on the brink of realising their dream of winning the Gaborone Region Women Football Division 1 league following their Saturday 2-1 victory over archrivals, Double Action.

Victory for GU moved them a step closer to ending Double Action’s persistent dominance in the elite women’s league.

The team scored through Keitumetse Ben-Ten Dithebe and an own goal from Laone Moloi while Segakolodi Didukanyane scored Double Action’s consolation goal from a penalty kick. The league is a two horse race between GU and Double Action as the the teams have been on equal points since the beginning of the season.

Even though the two came into the match having accumulated 31 points each, Double Action was at the summit of the log having scored the most goals.

The Saturday result has now placed GU at the top with 34 points relegating Double Action to second position.

GU coach Kakale Mabechu said their last league match would be against bottom of the log, Big Sisters.

Mabechu said with their real threat brushed aside, their focus was now on Big Sisters as it was the stumbling block toward winning the league.

He said their focus was to collect maximum points against Big Sisters.

Double Action coach William Monene said despite playing well, luck was not on his side.

Monene added that he was disappointed to lose against GU at a time when his team was about to cross the finish line.

Their last opponent of the season will be FC Ambassadors.

“In football anything is possible, but honestly I believe in finishing the game without relying on the opposition to do the work for us,” he said.  ENDS
