21 Apr 2024

Uniao Flamengo Santos beat visiting City Polar 2-1 to move to the second spot of the Debswana First Division South League table on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors saw a lot of the ball in the opening round and were rewarded 15 minutes from the start when lanky striker Kutlo Thobega broke the ice.

However an excellent second half performance by the homeside was quickly rewarded when two substitutes Matthews Moruti and Lemogang Kabo scored beautiful goals apiece to hand the Gabane side maximum points.

Moruti netted a beauty of a header moments after being introduced after being fed by an excellent Tumelo Sentle through ball.

The visitors threw every attacking option upfront but the youthful Santos rear guard remained resolute to thwart any imminent danger. Boikobo Kebafedile thought he had found the winner for Polar but watched helplessly as the woodwork came to Santos rescue with keeper well beaten.

The homeside also did not take kindly to the visitors countless count attacks and soon found their footing. Polar’s keeper Mbathi Sethole pulled several pin point saves to deny the marauding Sentle and his counterparts.

The win pushed Santo to 33 points in the closely contested league log three points ahead of Polar in the third spot. UB Hawks who drew 1-1 with URI Black Forest closes the top four bracket on 26 points.

In other game played over the weekend, Jwaneng Young Stars who now need six points to be crowned automatic league champions beat beleaguered Extension Gunners 2-0 in Jwaneng. Relegation bound Desert Nxau shocked Mogoditshane Fighters by walloping them 4-2. Notwane who are slowly slipping into the relegation trap door fell 0-1 to Mochudi Centre Chiefs at the River Plate stadium while Prisons XI were held to a goalless draw by Tlokweng United. ENDS
