A rhythmic, beautiful, electric, warm, lyrical, and melodious description best captures the essence of Mmabesi Live Band, elevating the group above its peers.
With sweet, melodic, jazzy, and funky sounds permeating the air whenever Mmabesi Live Band takes the stage, they have established themselves as industry leaders.
Introduced to the music scene in 2005, Mmabesi Live Band evolved from a humble marimba group with 25 members to a contemporary ensemble with a focus on Afro-Jazz, showcasing their musical versatility.
In an interview recently during the International Women’s Day commemoration in Paje, the group’s public relations officer, Keolopile Mafa, revealed that although the band initially had 25 members, they currently boast a talented lineup of 12 members, including four lead vocalists, six instrumentalists, and dedicated support staff.
Explaining the decrease in group size, Mafa highlighted that several members transitioned to pursue opportunities in other music groups, with notable artists like Christo Manto 7 and Riderson Segwabe branching out to form their own projects.
Emphasising the importance of treating arts as a business, Mafa encouraged support for the creative industry, highlighting its potential to drive economic growth and social awareness through edutainment.
Recognising the impact of music on emotions and behaviour, Mafa underscored the role of music in uplifting moods, creating awareness, and fostering positive societal values while steering youth away from risky behaviors.
“Music can raise someone’s mood, get them excited, or make them calm and relaxed.
Music also allows us to feel nearly or possibly all emotions that we experience in our lives”, he said.
Notable accolades include being crowned national champions in the arts festivals category for best live performances in 2017, followed by successive regional championship wins in the subsequent years.
The band’s goal is to expand their reach internationally by recording more songs and albums.
Their existing album, commemorating Botswana’s 50th anniversary, pays tribute to key figures in the country’s history. Through their music, Mmabesi Live Band aims to educate and inspire future generations about Botswana’s journey to independence.
Maintaining relevance through stylistic innovation, the band continues to captivate audiences with their performances.
Their recent appearances at high-profile events, including the International Women’s Day commemoration in Paje, underscore their growing prominence in the music scene. ENDS
