04 Mar 2024
The battle to win the second edition of the Jwaneng Mine Southern Region Women’s League is hotting up between Jwaneng Galaxy ladies team and the inaugural champions, Zodiac Collabo Girls from Lobatse.
In matches played in Lobatse on Saturday, the two teams continued their streak of lop-sided victories to remain tied at the top of the log standings with 12 points from four matches each. Galaxy ladies thrashed Moshupa New Stars 5-1 at Moselewapula ground while the Collabo Girls humiliated Roman Warriors 7-0. Galaxy ladies striker, Kealeboga Ramontshonyana stole the show by scoring all the five goals to keep her team at the top on goal difference. New Stars, however, started strongly and had the first chance of the match in the second minute.
Their striker, Tshegofatso Kentsheng found herself with ample space and unleashed a powerful shot, which was saved by Galaxy goalkeeper, Wame Molelekedi.
The Moshupa side did not give the log leaders any chance to manoeuvre in the first 20 minutes. However, Galaxy ladies started finding openings as the match progressed and midfielder Refilwe Matlho came close to giving them the lead with a well taken free-kick, which was parried away for a corner by goalkeeper Nonofo Mesotlo in the 22nd minute.
New Stars defense failed to clear the resultant corner-kick, which gave Galaxy ladies striker, Wame Molete a glorious opportunity but she narrowly missed the target from close range.
The striker then ballooned another opportunity over the posts a few minutes later as coach Gaoletlhoo ‘Ronaldo’ Nkutlwisang’s team took charge of the match. New Stars midfielder, Kebapetse Matlho cleared an attempt from Ramontshonyana off the line. Ramontshonyana then sent a free header off target a few minutes later, before finally opening the scoring with a close range effort in the 36th minute. She increased the Galaxy ladies lead with another close range finish five minutes later after receiving a pass from Patricia Motingwa.
New Stars reduced the deficit in the 59th minute through Kentsheng, but Ramontshonyana scored three more goals late on to seal a comfortable victory for her team. In other results, Maletamotse ladies hammered Eleven Queens 7-1 to leapfrog into third position with eight points. Bonto ladies beat Gangwaketse United 3-1 to move into fourth place with seven points, while Extension Gunners ladies were held to a goalless draw by Kanye Swallows ladies. ENDS
