Kalahari X-Country Racing club rider, Wade Den had a memorable start to the Botswana Motorsport National Championship as he stormed to position one of the race.
The premier MX 1 class hosted at the Mmopane track produced some nerve wrecking battles with Den, Kosmas Mamaloukos and Victor Du Toit all going for the top spot of the podium. Mamaloukos rode home first in the MX2 class but came in second overall.
Den previously impressive in off-road championships in Oodi and the Metsimotlhabe 200 challenge put up some hard work in his 450cc two-wheeler and sprinted to an overall first position podium finish.
He set off with blistering speed and looked set for victory and past the half-hour mark his grit and determination were finally rewarded as he completed his course ahead of Mamaloukos and Anton Henriksen.
The highly anticipated battles in the MX1 and MX2 classes produced some spectacular whips and incredible corner speeds.
Enterprising young rider, Jordan Maloba was crowned winner in the 85cc class speeding ahead of another exciting rider Andile Mogorosi.
Mogorosi blamed his poor performance to lack of power inside the track. Liam Pretorious came on the third sport.
In the high school class, Zameer Bodhanya arrived ahead of Cyle Pretorious while in the ladies category, Elang Chibana came first ahead of Jennifer Maloba.
In the lower 50cc class Luke Van Zyl was crowned the overall winner while Athena Mamaloukos and Lebopo Linchwe came on the second and third spot respectively.
According to one of the organisers, Kagiso Stephens, the motocross championship was a success and the riders were looking forward to preceding rounds of the closely contested race.
He said they were looking forward to receiving international entries in the next rounds. Stephens decried lack of sponsorship for the race but was adamant that they would succeed in luring a potential sponsor. He said the sport was growing in leaps and bounds and was happy with the attendance and performance of young riders in the 50cc class. ENDS
