The Botswana Cheerleading Federation (BCF) has appreciated the American Cheer and Dance Challenge for a successful cheerleading clinic, which was held in Gaborone on Saturday.
In an interview, BCF president, Neo Selwe said the clinic, which was meant for cheerleading athletes and coaches, aimed at invigorating the spirit of sport in the country.
Selwe said the training was also intended to inject some energy to the federation, which had been inactive for some time due to financial constraints that had hindered it to execute its programmes.
“The opportunity to be shown the ropes by acclaimed American coaches was an opportunity of a lifetime. The American coaches were coming from an invitation from South Africa, a trip that BCF took advantage of considering proximity and how courting their services would be a win-win situation both financially and being perfect timing,” she said.
She underscored the importance of maintaining momentum following two highly successful events which included the Cheer Festival and the National Championships in September and December respectively last year.
“These events not only showcased local talent but also indicated a burgeoning interest in cheer sport within the country,” she said.
During the clinic, coaches and athletes alike were exposed to various technical aspects of cheer sport that had been the existing gap locally.
For his part, American Cheer and Dance Challenge founder and lead coach, Ruben Rivera said he was impressed with the enthusiasm and passion that athletes displayed during the training.
“Our goal is to help coaches understand and feel successful in every aspect of cheerleading and dance.
With over 25 years in the cheerleading and dance industry, we are proud to say that we know what you need and how to help,” Rivera said.
With over 200 athletes who had registered for the clinic, Rivera said they hoped to equip participants with the skills and techniques necessary to propel the growth of the sport in Botswana. ENDS
