GU cranks pressure

30 Jan 2024

Ten men Gaborone United increased pressure at the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over BDF XI in a Botswana Premier League match played at Lobatse Sports Complex on January 28.

The hard fought victory courtesy of an early goal from striker Molaodi Tlhalefang, narrowed the gap between GU and log leaders Township Rollers to two points. Rollers were held to a goalless draw by Nico United on January 27. The Reds have collected 26 points from 12 matches. They have played one game fewer than their arch rivals.

Tlhalefang buried a pin-point cross from midfielder Sheikh Sesay to give them a fourth minute lead. The exciting Liberian midfielder dribbled past BDF XI defender Pelontle Lerole and squared for Thatayaone Kgamanyane. However, with the GU talisman hesitating to shoot, Sesay picked the ball again and sent a cross for Tlhalefang to bundle the ball past BDF XI goalkeeper Kagiso Matloo at the far post.

GU dictated terms with and could have extended their lead. Mpho Kgaswane thumped an effort narrowly over the posts in the 18th minute. Tlhalefang dragged a great opportunity off target and Lebogang Ditsele shot tamely at the goalkeeper after the Reds had opened up the defence of Onkabetse Seforo and Motlomelo Mkhwanazi.

Newly signed defender Tatenda Gora was authoritative alongside Tshepo Maikano in his first game for GU. The two centre backs stifled BDF XI attackers Mbonisi Ncube and Aobakwe Tshobo, and also built up play well from the back. GU goalkeeper Thabo Motswagole made his first real save in the 32nd minute with a comfortable save from a low shot by midfielder Mompoloki Moatshe.

Tlhalefang fired another glorious opportunity over the posts with Matloo at his mercy early in the second half after he was sent clear by a great pass from Mothusi Johnson. However, BDF XI imposed themselves more in the second half as GU started being disjointed. Motswagole pulled a brilliant save to prevent BDF from levelling matters in the 54th minute. He also produced an astonishing point blank save to deny Ncube in the 70th minute as GU clung onto their narrow lead in the second half.

In an effort to revive his attack, GU coach Pontsho Moloi brought on Zimbabwean striker Albert Nyamutsaka and Xolani Mmolawa for their debut. However, Nyamutsaka picked up two yellow cards, and was sent off, after fouling Mkhwanazi and Moatswi. BDF XI dropped to position six with 19 points from 12 matches following the defeat. Ends
