Athletics enthusiasts in Francistown were treated to quality races over the weekend when the second city hosted Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) track and field series one.

Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, and Leungo Scotch, who have already qualified for some international competitions, did well to raise hopes for medals this year.

“With the right training and preparation, these young stars could make a big impact on the world stage,” said BAA board member and chairperson of the northern bloc, Isaac Mbise in an interview.

He explained that the trio of Tebogo, Ndori and Scotch had already proven themselves on the world stage and their impressive performances in Francistown were a testament of their skill and experience.

Tebogo won the 400m race clocking 46:74. His competitors, amongst them, Ndori, came strong behind him, but he did not give up, digging deep for every last ounce of strength.

The triumphant Tebogo was followed by Ndori in the second spot with 46:72.

With his sights set on the upcoming competitions, Tebogo said he was determined to win more medals for the country.

“I have done it and I will continue to do it at the international stage,” he added.

Tebogo explained that he used local events to sharpen his skills with the ultimate goal of representing Botswana on the world stage. Another race that drew the attention of spectators was 800m senior women, which was won by Galefele Moroko.

Though she has not yet qualified for the world competitions for this year, Moroko defended her local title. Her performance was a reminder that hard work and perseverance could lead to success.

Galefele decried that starting the event late frustrated athletes as it disrupted their warm-up routine and mental preparation, leading to lack of focus.

“It also disrupted the timing of the entire event, causing delays and confusion and in such situations, athletes may feel rushed or pressured to perform at a higher level to make up for the lost time which can lead to errors,” she added.

However, her dedication to training and her determination to succeed will hopefully pay off in the future.

Some athletes from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia attended the event. ENDS
