Ezekiel Mpofu dies at 71

Former football legend and coach of various prominent Botswana teams, Ezekiel Mpofu has died aged 71.
His longtime companion, Maefho Tshwaane said Mpofu died at Princess Marina Hospital on December 8 after a short illness.
She said Mpofu was admitted on November 16 after he complained of some difficulties in breathing and his condition deteriorated until he died.
Mpofu was famous for saving top teams from relegation such as Gaborone United (GU).
One of the deceased’s mentees, Pogiso ‘Wrist’ Mmusi said it was a sad day for many clubs, such as Tafic. He said Mpofu was a dedicated coach, and his passion was evident to all who knew him.
“He will be remembered fondly by the Tafic family, and his loss will be felt deeply by all who knew him,” said Mmusi.
Former Francistown Regional Football Association (FRAFA), chairperson, Fanyana Fish said the late Mpofu was a football legend who has left an indelible mark in sport.
“He is remembered as a coach who made a difference, taking teams from obscurity to prominence, and his impact was felt by all who knew him.
Fish said his work with Tafic, GU and Prisons XI will never be forgotten, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and those he coached.
A Zimbabwean born national who became Motswana citizen since 2006, Mpofu’ s football journey started around 1985 when he coached Township Rollers and won a couple of leagues and cups before he moved to coach Tafic from 1987 to 1989.
In 1989, he assisted Gaborone United to avoid relegation from the then Super League (now Botswana Premier League).
From 1989-1995, he coached Prisons XI and helped it GET promoted to the elite league and also helped many other small clubs in the likes of Black Peril in Gaborone, Naughty Boys of Tlokweng, Mokgosi United of Ramotswa and Wonder Sporting Club.
The late Mpofu is survived by two sons and will be laid to rest on Saturday at Makakatlela cemetery in Mochudi. ENDS
