Monetary reward awaits The Mares

07 Dec 2023

A perusal of the Botswana Sport and Rewards Policy for National Teams means each player of the senior national women’s team, The Mares will get several thousands of Pula for their great feat of qualifying for WAFCON.

According to the policy, the players will get an appearance fee of P4 000 for their two matches against Kenya,  P1 500 and P3 000 for the draw and win in Nairobi and Gaborone respectively and P10 000 for qualifying, totalling P18 500 each player.

In an interview, the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) director for sport development, Peaceful Seleka said they are excited by The Mares achievement.

He said they would facilitate payment of all the player’s incentives and performance rewards in the shortest time possible to keep the team motivated.

Some of the football pundits were wondering if The Mares will be properly rewarded.

Botswana Football Association  (BFA) president Maclean Letshwiti’s had declared that the association does not have money to reward The Mares following their qualification.

He said that the BFA gave the team about P2 million, which is a prize money from CAF for their participation.

He said they would once again give The Mares all the price money from the 2024 edition for them to share.

“When the Kenyan’s were here, their incentives were provided by their government,” he said.

December 5th will go into Botswana sport’s history books as the day in which a Botswana football team secured a second consecutive slot to a continental competition.

The Mares win over the Harambee Starlets of Kenya was not only sweet in that Botswana was somewhat revenging for her AFCON 2027 bid loss to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, but was also a strong statement that the country’s qualification to the continental showpiece in 2022 was not a fluke.

Botswana secured her spot to the 15th edition of the competition to be staged in Morocco in Rabat 2024 following a draw in Kenya on 29th November and a win in Gaborone on Tuesday courtesy of a Keitumetse ‘Ben 10’ Dithebe’s goal. Ends
