Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has completed its phase one primary elections across nine constituencies with all party incumbent legislators sailing through.
The phase one primary elections were in line with the BCP annual conference resolution recently held in Tutume. The party had resolved to divide the primary elections into two phases, with phase one focusing on constituencies that have been allocated to the BCP, while candidates from remaining constituencies will be determined in the phase two of the primary elections.
While the primary elections covered both local and parliamentary levels, much of the attention was on the parliamentary seats.
The Okavango West constituency primary election saw Dr Kenny Kapinga prevailing over Mr Haidongo Haidongo.
Another incumbent MP Mr Kgoberego Nkawana registered 1000 votes against Mr Dimpho Mashaba’s 679 in Selibe Phikwe East constituency while in Selibe Phikwe West Mr Reuben Kaizer defeated Professor Brother Malema with 1061 votes against the latter’s 520.
Mr Tumelo Senwelo will represent the party in the next general election in the newly gazetted Kgatleng Central constituency after getting 648 votes, while his competitor Mr Michael Moji was voted by 414 people.
In Ngami constituency, the BCP will field Mr Phillimon Arone following his victory against Mr Mpoke Karapo and Mr Jerson Kazombung who came second and third respectfully.
Mr Gabatsholwe Disho was declared the BCP candidate for the Okavango East constituency after garnering 1453 votes against Mr Kabelo Mahupe’s 994 and Mr Boipuso Mangurunga’s 476 votes while Mr Benjamin Keloilwe only managed 128 votes.
Mr Gape Motswaledi will be the party’s candidate in Palapye following the de-camping of the incumbent legislator Mr Oneetse Ramogapi to the Umbrella for the Democratic Change. Mr Motswaledi received 1364 votes against Ms Ethel Gampone’s 787.
The BCP Nkange electorates elected Mr Mothaleemang Moalosi to represent the party in the 2024 general elections. Mr Moalosi gained 2203 votes against Mr Morgan Moseki’s 1026.
Mr Boniface Mabeo has won the party parliamentary candidacy with 1995 votes while Mr Donald Keakile and Mr Godfrey Moduka registered 1053 and 644 votes respectively.
Meanwhile, the BCP in a media statement released Monday congratulated all the candidates for participating in the primary elections and thereby reaffirming the BCP’s commitment to democracy and good governance.
“We encourage all our members including those who did not succeed to be steadfast and remember that all is not lost. As per the BCP ideals, culture and practices, the Party is the greater victor,” says the statement.
The statement further states that BCP remains committed to work collaboratively with like-minded progressive forces that stand for good governance, democratic principles, and accountable leadership. Ends
