Rapoos journey to Thailand

05 Oct 2023

In the world of music, stories of talent blossoming are often filled with chords of inspiration and harmonious collaboration. Such is the tale of Gomotsegang Rapoo, a gifted guitarist who hails from Mochudi, and whose musical journey has taken him from the heart of Botswana to the vibrant landscapes of Thailand.

Having left for Thailand early this month, Rapoo trust that his music will be appreciated  since Thailand is popular with live bands that serenade audiences daily.

Now a music director and guitarist for his new band, he anticipates bringing a unique flavour to the Thai music scene, something he said reflected his origins and his individuality.

Rapoo’s musical wanderings started in the late ‘90s when he tapped into his artistic passion in the serene confines of a church playing the drums. Soon, he expanded his horizons with professional guitar lessons at the World of Music School in 2000.

In 2006, a serendipitous encounter with Gavin Banton in East London will forever alter the course of his life. Banton’s introduction to Rapoo came through Kabbalah Tamakat, who initially sought bass guitar lessons from Gavin.

“I met Gavin 2006 towards the end of October, a few days before his birthday,” said Rapoo recounting the moments that sparked their musical journey.

“They were busy jamming in my rehearsal room. I sat and I listened and thought...okay, this boy plays nice,” he said.

Through tireless dedication and mentorship, Banton polished Rapoo’s skills until he emerged as the accomplished guitarist he is today.  He recently extended an invitation for Rapoo to join him in Thailand, where he had relocated to seek new musical opportunities.

Reflecting on Rapoo’s character, Banton speaks with admiration. “He is an awesome dude, hard-working, and I have been out of Botswana for nine years, but I have never forgotten them.

”He further added, “I always kept them in my heart because they have lived with me in Extension 27 for seven years.  So yeah, you can imagine the bond that they have developed between me and them.”

Rapoo’s career has been an eclectic blend of experiences, earning him encounters with some of the world’s legendary musicians.  He has played for the likes of Hugh Masekela, Steve Kekana, Jimmy Dludlu, ATI, Budhaza, Nana Coyote, Socca Moruakgomo, Drummerboy, Sasa Klass and Scar, leaving his mark on over 300 recordings, including albums by Lizibo, Culture Spears, Han C and Women of Jazz.

Rapoo’s paths crossed with Tomeletso Sereetsi of Sereetsi and the Natives in 2016, leading to a fruitful partnership that continues to thrive in shows and album recordings.

While his musical journey took him to several countries, including Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and Nigeria, for him one moment stands out as truly exhilarating. “The most exhilarating moment I can specifically speak about was when I played as part of Burna Boy’s live band among thousands of revellers in Botswana,” he said. He said throughout his journey, Sereetsi has been more than just a colleague. “Sereetsi has always been a great source of guidance and mentor to me,” he said and he continues to look up to him for his unwavering belief in his talents and the immense success he has achieved.

Rapoo’s guitar style is a testament to the timeless nature of music and he explains that from a young age, he used to listen to jazz and blues. “I started listening to George Benson, and that is how I got to develop interest to play like him,” he said. For those aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Rapoo shared three indispensable rules of attitude, versatility and staying away from drugs.

He encourages musicians to create positive environment, to be diverse in their repertoire, and to prioritise their well-being and creativity through practice.

As he embarks on this new chapter in Thailand, his journey tells a powerful story of music and its ability to transcend borders and bring people together.

His guitar will continue to tell a captivating story of talent and passion from Botswana. ENDS
