Botswana table tennis player Reneilwe Lekorwe redeemed local camp winning 3-1 in the U13 singles category at the ongoing South Africa Open Championships 2023 at Protea Sports Centre in Cape Town.

Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA) sent a quartet of Lekorwe, Brown Sebokolodi, Reatile Morapedi and Olorato Ramagapu, who are expected to take part in the open championships, which started on September 27 and ends on October 8.

Lekorwe, who saved the day after his teammates were trampled out in their encounters, will feature in the next round of the U13 singles category.

In the mixed event category which concluded Tuesday, the duo of Morapedi and Ramagapu ended in the last 32.

The duo of Morapedi and Sebokolodi also ended in the last 32 in the men’s double category.

In the ladies team final event, Ramagapu lost 3-1 to Zodwa Maphanga of South Africa.

The elite/senior singles category will commence after conclusion of the junior singles category.

The tournament came after a successful Phoenix Botswana Assurance sponsored Independence tournament featuring local and Zambia table tennis players.

BTTA Public Relations Officer, Tshegofatso Malepa revealed that tournament the Cape meet featured among other categories para and veteran, junior and elite categories.  

Malepa said the event would offer local table tennis players an opportunity to enhance their skills and improve their performance when assigned to represent the country in the regional and international arena.

She was certain that the tournament will provide the team with valuable experience and opportunities to compete with top athletes from around the world. ENDS
