20 Sep 2023

After globe-trotting for almost six months and showing his opponents a clean pair of heels, Botswana’s sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo is back home.

He arrived on Tuesday to a hero’s welcome from Batswana of all walks of life at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport.

Africa’s fastest man said he was happy to be back home after a hectic season across the world. He also said he was happy with his performance as he managed to register personal best times in 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m. He added that it was not something that they had planned for.

He credited his coach and training partners, Bayapo Ndori, Leungo Scotch and Zibani Ngozi for pushing him to achieve.

Tebogo said he would be taking a break before preparing for an even busier season next year, as there would be the African Games in Accra, Ghana, Africa Athletics Championships in Cameron and the Olympic Games in France.

The sprint sensation, however, said they would not take part in all the competitions.

He noted that he would take part in individual races and relays, adding that they would take the decision after planning with the team.

About his injuries in Budapest and Oregon, he said he was back to zero as the last injury occurred during his last race of the season, adding that the most important thing would be to relax and heal.

Tebogo was accompanied by his coach, Kebonyemodisa Mosimanyane and Leungo Scotch on his arrival.

The coach said winning the 100 metres silver medal at the World Championships was the crowning moment for Tebogo as he became the first African to bag the medal.

He added that the second bronze medal in 200 meters was the cherry on top.

He also noted that his athletes performance has raised expectations among Batswana that they would bag a medal at next year’s Olympics.

He said Tebogo still needed three seasons to mature and reach his peak and that the 2028 Olympics was the main target for Tebogo to excel and maybe shatter a few more records. ENDS
