Botswana Cheerleading Federation has kick-started an initiative to capacitate coaches and judges to improve the game.
The federation’s president, Neo Selwe, said in an interview that they conducted an online training recently to empower as many coaches as possible.
“As much as we say cheerleading is a dance, it not exactly dancing because there are skills that one needs to incorporate to the moves,” she said. In that regard, Selwe said they organised the training so that coaches could be in a good position during the competition as to what was being judged.
Furthermore, she said they would be hosting national championships in December, Therefore, the training came at the right time as it would give the coaches an opportunity to implement what they were taught.
She said the training would also enable stakeholders to have a proper choreography.
“Now we are shifting our focus to serious competitive cheerleading, where they will do proper moves, arm and leg placement as well as monitor if their stunts are well executed,” Selwe added. Talking about training of judges, she said the main objective was to capacitate them further in the area of cheerleading judging.
“Remember our sport is still new in Botswana hence we decided to train both coaches and judges at the same time so that they are at the same level in the evolution of the cheerleading sport,” she said. ENDs
