The Sekatis show demystifies polygamy

The Sekatis: The Untold Truths reality series, which premiered on Sunday, is not advocating polygamy.
“This is our personal decision and unique arrangement we have chosen as a family,” Kagiso Sekati, first sister wife of Kemmonye Sekati said during the watch party with the media at Rodizio Restaurant in Phakalane.
As the first sister wife, Kagiso believes that individuals have the freedom to choose what they want, adding that their decision was not made in response to any relationship issues.
She also shared her journey towards accepting the polygamous family set up, acknowledging that it took wisdom to overcome her initial reluctance when her husband expressed his desire to take a second wife.
“What freed me was prayer and a change of mindset.
I realised that besides being in a happy marriage, my husband never ill-treated me.
That’s when I started looking at things differently,” she said.
For her part, Mpho, the second sister wife also said as a family they accepted the set up and were at peace with it.
Kemmonye, the husband, believes that effective communication, equality, and fairness are crucial for maintaining this family set up.
“We communicate a lot.
I have to admit that even though I wanted to marry within a polygamous set up, I made mistakes because I didn’t know how best to do it,” he said.
In an interview, Tsabo Othusitse, marketing manager at YTV, she said she believed that people should be allowed to do what made them happy.
Othusitse believes that although the Sekatis say they are not advocating polygamy, the family structure could potentially address the issue of passion killings that persists in Botswana.
She believes that people should respect and accept individuals’ choices regarding their families, as they had learnt to embrace their unique situation.
Masego Busumane, a digital marketing strategist, said her perspective on polygamy changed after witnessing the show.
Despite admitting to being naturally jealous, she said she was impressed by the peaceful co-existence between Kagiso, and Mpho.
This experience has led her to believe that polygamy is not as daunting as she once thought.
In observing the family during the show, Busumane said she saw a harmonious environment where all members co-exist.
The show is to be aired on DStv Botswana channel 291 every Sunday at 630pm through local broadcaster YTV to give viewers an inside look into the Sekatis daily lives.
The repeat is on Mondays at 13:30pm. ENDS
