Four teams will participate in this year’s Carlos Sebina Soccer Challenge billed for Saturday at the Old Francistown Stadium.
The four teams are Calendar Stars FC, which is the defending champion, Orapa United FC, Morupule Wanderers FC and Chadibe FC. In addition, six social club teams have been included in the tournament to play matches for entertainment purposes and these are Happy Boys SC, Gareitere SC, Itekeng SC, Northern Legends SC, Tafic Masters SC and Stress SC. The Soccer Challenge is the brain child of Francistown-based business man, Carlos Sebina, and the winner will walk away with P25000 while the runners up will get P15000.
The other two teams will each be consoled with P5000 each.
Speaking at a press conference this week, Sebina said the challenge was a way of giving back to the community and the focus is to contribute to community social development, physical enhancement and as well as community development for Francistown. He said he was determined that the soccer tournament will boost the local economy and create safe entertainment for Francistowners.
Sebina also said players for social clubs would also showcase their talent and catch the eyes of team scouts.
He also stated that the proceeds of the tournament will be donated to individual students within the Francistown schooling community, especially primary schools.
“We have targeted 21 primary schools within Francistown and for every school we will select five students who we are going to donate school uniforms to,” Sebina said.
Sebina also said this year’s CS Soccer Challenge will also be donating a wheelchair to Geoffrey Mayglip, a former Tafic player and Francistown soccer legend who lost his leg.
For his part, Soccer Challenge representative, Ofentse Motlogelwa, stated that the Botswana Football Association (BFA) has also landed a helping hand in the tournament by assigning two aspiring referees to officiate at the tournament. Patrons will part with P20 while vehicles will be charged P10 at the gate. ENDS
