Team Botswana off to Tunisia

19 Jun 2023

The best beach volleyball team in the continent without a natural beach on its shores is off to Hammamet, Tunisia, to compete in the 2nd Africa Beach Games.

Sending off the team last week, Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) chief programmes officer in the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture (MYSC), Lincoln Goitsemang said the country had made strides in sports.

Goitsemang said sport was just one of the sectors that could be developed to grow the country’s economy.

He said participating and investing in sport would make the country accessible to the world in spite of its landlocked status. He praised the team as formidable for being ranked first in the continent in beach volleyball.

In just two years, local beach volleyball players Jack Sekao and George Chiswaniso are ranked number one in Africa.

Their five-star performance at the Zone VI games earned them gold medals.

The team’s coach, Kabelo Marumo said they had trained in the two against two format and not the 4 by 4 style, adding that the  4 by 4 format was new and that there were no 4 x 4 competitions yet.

Marumo also said while beach volleyball was new in the country, they were already dominating in Africa.

The team is composed of six athletes comprising Sekao, Chiswaniso, Trevor Manduwa, Nkgaiseng Balosi, Saletlhake Saletlhake and Mosiiwa Baleofi. Ends
