Matebele first division south champions

14 May 2023

Matebele, fondly known as Kuka Ntsu, have been crowned champions of Debswana First Division South league. Consequently, the team has been automatically promoted to the premier league.

Matebele were guaranteed a safe passage to the elite league after a 1-0 victory against Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

A fourth minute strike from Keorapetse Ramakgathi was enough to lift Matebele to top flight football with a total of 44 points..

Three other teams, Crackit City Polar, VTM and Notwane could have won the championship in an explosive title race that lasted until the final day.

The trio prayed for Matebele to falter while they yearned to secure comfortable victories to claim the top spot.

Before the last day, it was four teams, one point separating all in the top four bracket. Relegation bound Matebejana could be fingered for deciding the fate of the league campaign.

They beat VTM last weekend to deny them any hope of automatic promotion before holding run away log leaders Crackit City Polar to a goalless draw in the final match.

Notwane secured a third spot finish after a 2-0 victory against URI Black Forest in Mmankgodi.

On form attacker Sithembile Mbuqe and Thabang Ofitlhile were on the score sheet at the Black Forest Park to clinch maximum points for Sechaba and finish on 43 points.

Their victory pushed the home side deeper into muddy waters as they place their fate in the results of the premier league promotional match between VTM and Chadibe from the First Division North league at a date to be announced later.

Bafana Ba Dijabane as VTM are fondly known booked a space in the promotional play offs after walloping relegated Broadhurst United 5-0 at the VTM arena in Gamononyane.

Emang Tlhasenyana grabbed a hattrick before Ayanda Molefe and second half substitute Ernest Tawadzadza nailed the last two.

In other final matches played on Saturday, Tlokweng United inched into the top eight bracket after a 2-1 victory against relegated Black Rangers.
