Propellers Swimming Club member, Gaamangwe Keitsile was the toast of the day winning two morning events during the fourth DMSS Gators gala held at the University of Botswana on Saturday.
Gaamangwe won the men 15-year-olds 200-metre freestyle with a time of 2:10.68 followed by DMSS Club swimmers’ Rayhan Khonat and Ntsika Mothibatsela with 2:09.44 and 2:11.16 respectively.
Gaamangwe also impressed in the men’s 15-year-olds 50-metre butterfly winning with 26.87 followed by Ntsika and another DMSS swimmer, Nathan Seetso with 27.83 and 29.85 respectively.
Gaamangwe told BOPA in an interview that he was well prepared for the competition and his win was not by chance.
He said he deliberately started slow in the 200-metre free style to preserve energy, but went faster when the time was right, because he was up against strong swimmers.
“My strategy was to meet my target and towards the end of the race I had to make a strong finish, because normally people ‘die’ towards the end of the race.
So yes, that was my whole plan,” said Gaamangwe.
He said from here, his focus would be on CANA Zone IV to be held in Luanda, Angola in May.
The women 200-metre free style was won by Tselane Matthews of DMSS with 2:19.77, followed by her team-mates Hannah Jobe and Isabelle Charles with 2:33.76 and 3:07.61 respectively.
Matthews told BOPA that he had been training a lot for 200- metres and what she had planned for worked. “I was against a strong line up, so I had to just focus on my race and my target was to go harder in the last part of the race,” said Tselane.
Muhomba Tariro of Bulawayo Amatuer Swimming is the girls 14- year-olds 100 metres breaststroke champion, stopping the clock at 1:29.29, followed by her teammate, Tatenda Muhomba with 1:34.75 while Realeboga Molelowatladi of Gaborone Aquatics Club finished third with 1:40.31. ENDS
