Cycling can help motivate people with disabilities

02 Apr 2023

An international club together with Lobatse Cycling Club and Botswana Council for the Disabled recently held an awareness campaign for the disabled.

Speaking at the event, Botswana Council for the Disabled executive director, Moffat Louis, called on all stakeholders, especially the town leadership and Lobatse Cycling Club, to make sure that going forward, cyclists with disabilities were part of the activities.

He said the campaign was to encourage people with disabilities to take part in sport and in leadership positions.

Louis said Botswana Council for the Disabled, together with Inclusive Cycling International, worked on a joint proposal and American Embassy sponsored the project.

He said the project would afford people with disabilities to compete and play with athletes from other countries because they would now have special bicycles.

Greg Milano of the club from the United States said it was up to the leaders to ensure they increased the number of bicycles to cater for most of the people living with disabilities.

He pointed out that when they started the club, they used old bicycles and people volunteered to help grow the club which now had footprints around the world.

He called on sponsors to come on board and help athletes living with disabilities realise their dreams. ENDS
