Kaizer Chiefs chairperson, Kaizer Motaung and the legendary Doctor Khumalo have sent their condolences to the family of the late Terrence Mophuting.
They said they learnt of his death after he was laid to rest and therefore could not attend his funeral.
Mophuting was the first Motswana to wear the famous gold and black colours of the South African premier league giants in the late 80s.
Khumalo said the late Mophuting was was his roommate at Naturena.
He passed the condolences in Gaborone on Friday at a gala dinner organised to raise funds and introduce the recently established Super League Legends cooperative.
Khumalo said Motaung and the Kaizer Chiefs family were saddened by the death of Mophuting.
He described Mophuting as a quiet individual who did not engage in lengthy conversations.
“He was a humble and quiet individual. He introduced your style of football to South Africa,” he said.
Sharing his football history, Khumalo noted that the only red card that he ever received while playing for Bafana Bafana was issued by Edwin Senai, a Botswana referee.
Khumalo also noted that the formation of the Super League Legends catered for players who featured between 1970 and 1999, the period that Kaizer Chiefs was in existence.
He said the club was in the process of registering another player from Botswana being Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.
He appealed to Super League Legends to work hard and drive the mandate of the organisation.
Khumalo also delivered a gift from Motaung to President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi in the form of the current Kaizer Chiefs tracksuit.
The team also gave President Masisi the club’s respected No 15 jersey that has been retired. The jersey was worn by Khumalo.
President Masisi donated a Rolex watch to the Super League Legends to assist them in their fundraising efforts.
The patron of the Super League Legends, Phillip Makgalemele, assured that all was not lost and that the Kaizer Chiefs family still had a chance to pay their respect to Mophuting.
He noted that the family was yet to erect a tombstone and that Kaizer Chiefs could contribute to the project. ENDs
