Capital Bank has injected P50 000 into Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA) coffers towards this year’s edition of Lefika Table Tennis Tournament.
The sponsorship is against the association’s P25 000 budget for the tournament billed for Livingstone Kolobeng College on March 4 and June 24.
Speaking during the sponsorship launch on Friday, Capital Bank chief executive officer, Reinette Van der Merwe said the bank was passionate about sport development, hence it had partnered with BTTA.
She said BTTA had players who had the potential to compete at the highest level if well supported, adding that as the private sector, they were open to partner with sport for its growth.
“We are keen to assist sport in Botswana to grow,” Van der Merwe said, adding that the P50 000 sponsorship was divided into two to cater for each session of the tourney.
BTTA president, Kudzanani Motswagole said BTTA was a well-managed association that had the welfare of its athletes at heart.
He said the association had 35 athletes working at KGK Diamonds Botswana and also secured scholarships for some of its athletes to study in India.
Motswagole said such commitments indicated how passionate they were about sport and the welfare of the athletes.
He also said this year’s Lefika edition would help players to prepare for the BTTA upcoming world qualifiers, which the association would host later this year.
The BTTA president also said half of the athletes earnings from Lefika tourney would be credited into their individual Lefika Saving account at Capital Bank, adding that the account did not charge monthly fee and would help athletes to save for the future.
Gaborone City major, Austin Abraham observed that it was not easy to get sponsorships and that the government alone could not afford to develop sport, as such the role of the private sector in sport development was crucial. Ends
