Zakhem wooes ABSA

23 Feb 2023

Botswana Football League (BFL) board chairperson, Nicholas Zakhem, has pleaded with ABSA Bank to consider being the league  sponsor.

He was speaking at an event in Gaborone on Wednesday where the bank announced a P1.7 million league sponsorship.

“Imagine the league being called ABSA Premier League, we want to wear ABSA all over, we want you to come on board,’ Zakhem said.

He said, by being the title sponsor, ABSA would be ploughing back to the community.

He said BFL was still finding its ground given that it took its autonomy from Botswana Football Association in 2020.

For her part, ABSA Bank managing director, Keabetswe Pheko-Moshagane, said the sponsorship package would be used to support the league in various ways such as running of the games and completion of the remaining fixtures.

She said the bank was proud to support the league, adding that in the past two seasons, they had invested approximately P7 million to help grow football.

“We believe this is a testament of our commitment to continue to make a meaningful impact in the communities and societies that we operate in,” she added.

Pheko-Moshagane said ABSA understood the importance of football, which she described  as a unifying force.

Football, she said, was also important part of Botswana culture and a key contributor to the economic and social development of the country.

The ABSA boss further said football was also a source of national pride and joy, hence the bank finding it prudent to support BFL. “We still have a long way to go and organisations like ABSA can play a key role in building the sport fraternity in Botswana,” she said. Ends
