World Athletics has ratified Letsile Tebogo’s 9.91 Under 20 100m record, which he set at the World Junior Championships in Cali, Columbia last year.
Tebogo, who is the first Motswana to win the 100m World Junior Championship smashed his own record of 9.94 seconds that he had at the World Championships in Oregon.
His coach, Kebonyemodisa ‘Dose’ Mosimanyane said in an interview that he was happy that the 9.91 record had been ratified by the athletics governing body.
“Honestly, I am happy, excited, relived and I am proud to be the coach of the record holder,” he said.
Dose said the ratification, came when the new season was starting and athletes were training without competition.
That, he explained, had the potential to uplift the spirits of the athletes.
He said the ratification would boost Tebogo’s morale and also serve as a reminder for others to see what heights they could reach.
He said this year, Tebogo would now be joining the senior category, where he would be competing with ‘big boys’, with confidence.
Immediately after the announcement, Tebogo updated his Facebook page saying; “best news for any sportsperson in this dog eat dog world... A great way to start the 2023 season.
Whenever you see my name on the starting list, pay immense attention”.
Meanwhile, Tebogo who has since graduated from ‘boys to men’ will this year share the track with some shrewd 100m sprinters amongst them: USA’s Fred Kerley, Trayvon Bromell, Christian Coleman, Kenyan Ferdinand Omanyla and South African Akani Simbile. ENDS
